Lesson 9 · The Duck's Course
Hand of 11
One point from victory the pair sees each other's cards and decides before playing: worth 3, or hand over 1.
The hand you decide before playing
In Paulista the game goes to 12. When your pair reaches 11, the next hand is a different animal: before a single card, you and your partner see each other's cards and decide together. Play, and the hand is worth 3: win the hand, win the game. Fold, and the other pair gets 1 point. Nobody calls truco in that hand. The arithmetic is the same as always, only with six cards laid out in front of you: do the pair's three best cards win two rounds? If both pairs are on 11, it's the iron hand: worth 1, no truco, and everyone plays face-down, picking a card without seeing it.
Folding on the hand of 11
Your pair has 11, theirs has 7. You decide to fold. How many points do they score?
Both pairs on 11
Both pairs have reached 11. What happens in the next hand?
Play or fold, strong hand
Your pair has 11, they have 6. The vira is the 7 of hearts: the manilhas are the queens. You see your cards and your partner's. Decide: play for 3 or fold and give up 1. Once you decide, all four hands are shown.
Play or fold, weak hand
Again 11 to 6, and the manilhas are the queens. Look at your cards and your partner's and decide: play for 3 or fold and give up 1. The hands are shown afterwards.
